All in a Day’s Work for Pebble Beach

All in a Day’s Work for Pebble Beach

U.S. Open at Pebble Beach

When the top golfers in the world take center stage for one of the year’s four major tournaments, they expect the courses to be at the highest level of playability. This year Pebble Beach Golf Links was one of those stages. To achieve tournament conditions for the U.S. Open in June, Pebble Beach superintendent Chris Dalhamer, CGCS, looked to equipment from Jacobsen.

Pebble Beach has the smallest greens on the PGA Tour, and Dalhamer selected the Eclipse 122 walking greens mower to help get them as close to perfect as possible. He has been with the Pebble Beach Company for 11 years and is completing his fifth year as course superintendent. During his tenure he has been involved with several large events, including the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the 1999 U.S. Amateur. He says the Eclipse 122 is a valuable tool.

“The Eclipse allows us to continually take inventory of what our greens need so we can set the mower to give us the cut we want for the best quality each day,” he says. “Being able to dial in the frequency of clip to a particular course is huge.”
With the battery-powered Eclipse 122, the battery position can be moved forward or back to be more or less aggressive.
“For this year’s U.S. Open,” Dalhamer says, “we moved the batteries forward to be more aggressive. It’s an enormous advantage. Mowers that have this flexibility are a huge contributor to giving us the best quality-of-cut possible. There’s not another greens mower with the capability of the Eclipse 122.”
As the preferred equipment supplier to the Pebble Beach Company and the PGA of America, Jacobsen also provided the maintenance staff with LF-3400s for fairways, Tri-King triplex mowers for intermediate areas, and for roughs, AR-522 five-gang articulated rotary mowers and HR-9016 wide area mowers. The utility vehicle of choice was the Cushman Turf Truckster.
Jacobsen’s support for this major event included tournament support consultant Vollie Carr and product support managers Rich Stutzman and David Walker. They provided valuable assistance to Dalhamer and his 36-person team and more than 100 volunteers. They were on the course around the clock throughout the tournament to ensure that the maintenance operation ran smoothly.

Rain Bird Golf Announces New 751 Golf Rotor

RAIN BIRD GOLF’S NEW FULL- AND PART- CIRCLE ROTORS
FEATURE FASTER, EASIER ARC ADJUSTMENTS

Rain Bird® 751 Golf Rotors with Rapid-Adjust Technology
Offer Full- or Part-Circle Irrigation with the Twist of a Screw

TUCSON, Ariz. (August 9, 2010) –-More than ever before, golf courses need irrigation technology that provides top performance, water-efficiency, versatility and value. Now, Rain Bird is helping golf course superintendents and managers make the most of every dollar with Rain Bird’s new Full- and Part-Circle 751 Golf Rotors, featuring Rapid-Adjust Technology and Memory Arc®

As any superintendent knows, a course’s watering needs can change from day-to-day. Rain Bird® 751 Golf Rotors make it possible for superintendents to easily and quickly adjust watering on greens, fairways or roughs as needed. These new rotors offer simple, top-adjustable rotation settings that retain the memory of their part-circle arc setting when shifting between full- and part-circle operations. This unique product is designed to offer quick adjustments for the life of the rotor with just a turn of a screw.  As a result, these new rotors allow superintendents to increase or decrease the watering area with a simple twist of the wrist. However, it’s not necessary to completely replace an existing Rain Bird rotor in order to enjoy the benefits of the new 751 model. According to Lloyd von Scheliha, product manager for Rain Bird’s golf rotors, courses with older Rain Bird rotors currently installed can easily integrate the 751’s Rapid-Adjust Technology.

“Unlike competitive products, Rain Bird New Rotors offer backward-compatibility with every EAGLE Rotor manufactured since 1992,” von Scheliha explained. “That means in many instances, superintendents can simply drop the new Rain Bird 751 internal assembly into their existing rotor cases, saving both time and money.”

In addition to Rapid-Adjust Technology, Rain Bird 751 Golf Rotors offer the performance and durability that superintendents have come to expect from Rain Bird. Field and laboratory tests have found the 751 Rotors to be up to 23 percent more efficient than those offered by the next-closest competitor—with durability that helps the rotors last up to 10 times longer. With larger water droplets and reliable pressure regulation, Rain Bird rotors consistently deliver even distribution for healthier playing surfaces and a lower total cost of ownership.

“These days, everyone wants to make the most of every dollar,” von Scheliha said. “That’s why Rain Bird’s family of golf rotors combines versatility, durability and performance. Our new Rain Bird 751 Golf Rotors build upon that quality reputation by optimizing water consumption, simplifying operation and minimizing replacement, maintenance and inventory costs.”
