How to Avoid Premature Wear of Caster Wheels and Rear Rollers

AR-522Did you know that operating Jacobsen AR-5 and AR-522 rotary rough mowers in the “mow” mode with the traction control switch turned off could contribute to premature wear of the caster wheels and rear roller?

Jacobsen recommends that when the decks are cutting, the traction control switch be in the On position.  This will transfer some of the deck weight to the tractor which will lower the overall weight being carried by the casters and rollers, extending the life of these components plus improve the traction of the unit.

It is also important that the traction control system be calibrated correctly; instructions on calibration are included below.  They are also found in the Operators Manual or you can contact your local Jacobsen dealer.

Traction Control System Calibration
NORMAL MODE
1 ) Start Engine
2 ) Park brake “OFF”
3 ) Full Throttle
4 ) Turn PTO Switch “ON”
5 ) Lower Decks to Ground (Joystick-lower)
6 ) Turn Traction Control switch “ON”
Let this Set-up run for 5 minutes or until at operating temperature.
7 ) Turn Traction Control switch “OFF”
8 ) Turn PTO switch “OFF”
9 ) Park brake “ON”

CALIBRATION MODE (Park Brake “ON”, Seat Switch “ON”, PTO “OFF” and Traction Pedal in Neutral)
1 ) Verify decks are all the way down.  Hold momentary Traction Control switch down for 5 seconds until controller beeps and then stops.
2 ) Tap Joystick-Raise one time and wait 3-5 seconds.
3 ) If the decks remain on the ground, repeat step 2 until the decks begin to raise.
4 ) When decks are off the ground, tap joystick down and wait until decks stop moving.
All front decks should now be on the ground.
5 ) If all front decks are not on the ground, repeat step 4.  Do not rush through this procedure.
6 ) Once decks are on the ground, hold down Traction Control switch for 5 seconds (listen for the beep to stop) to accept calibration.
To cancel mode, turn the key switch “OFF”

Engines Meet Stricter Emission Regulations

EngineAs the world demands higher quality and more eco-friendly engines, Jacobsen and its engine partners – Kubota, Honda and Suzuki – are dedicated to making sure every product meets or exceeds stricter engine emission compliance regulations.

The facilities at these engine suppliers are designed to gather information concerning emission regulations from all over the world and analyze it.  This is performed through computer controlled automatic emission tests.

Newly developed engine models must first pass certification tests for all existing emission regulations.  Then, the engines move into mass production followed by regular sampling inspections to reconfirm that they meet the high quality expectations of each engine manufacturer and Jacobsen.

“We work very closely with our engine suppliers to maximize our efforts and minimize the cost impact to the customer,” says Scott Lemos, a safety specialist with Jacobsen’s engineering department.  “In the next few years the cost of compliance will increase as diesel engines come on the market with cleaner exhaust emissions standards.  Gasoline engines are in the same category as regulations on evaporative (fumes) and exhaust emissions get stricter.”

Jacobsen will maintain its leadership position by continuing to build innovative, reliable turf care products that deliver the quality, productivity and performance customers expect, while protecting and enhancing the environment in their design, manufacture and operation.

InCommand Takes Operator Input Out of the Equation

InCommandAt the forefront of the design of every piece of Jacobsen equipment is performance, low cost of ownership and ease of operation and service.  This commitment to product innovation results in breakthrough technology and advancements in the management and care of fine turf.

Include the InCommand Control System for all Jacobsen walking greens mowers in this category.  Because there is no standard-sized operator, differences in height, hand size and walk speed make it difficult to get a consistent cut.

InCommand takes unwanted operator input out of the equation.  A spring-assisted D-handle provides steady, consistent movement and dampens operator irregularities.  InCommand control system allows operators to adjust the walk speed of the machine on the fly without changing the Frequency of Clip (FOC), making the Eclipse 100 Series, the GK 500 Series and PGM mowers easy to use and maneuver for operators of all experience levels.

“InCommand simplifies operator training,” Jacobsen product manager Quinn Derby says.  “The system is durable and requires few adjustments, a feature very much appreciated by operators and technicians.”

Operators are not able to tamper with the InCommand system’s customized settings.  Superintendents have an access code to the command center.  Without the code, reel speed, ground speed and frequency-of-cut cannot be changed.

Jacobsen Engineering Raises the Bar on Fairway Mowers

Jacobsen Engineering Raises the Bar on Fairway Mowers

Jacobsen LF Fairway Mowers

At the forefront of the design of every piece of Jacobsen equipment is performance, low cost of ownership and ease of operation and service. This commitment to product innovation results in breakthrough technology and advancements in the management and care of fine turf.

For proof of this commitment, look no further than Jacobsen’s line of LF fairway mowers. There have been several enhancements to this series in the last few years:

  – An integrated controller was introduced to provide on-board diagnostics to ease troubleshooting and service.  The elimination of numerous relays and switches increases reliability.

  – Reel circuit amperage cut out was increased from 5 amps to 7 amps.

  – Mil-spec proximity sensors to improve reliability in interlock controls replaced Reed switches.

  – The durability and appearance of the mowers’ hoods were improved by manufacturing them with ABS plastic instead of fiberglass. The new hoods are lighter, less susceptible to cracking and do not fade.

  – A side-by-side radiator/hydraulic cooler eliminates a “piggy back-style” cooling package for more efficient fluid cooling.

  – Floorboard removal was made easier for enhanced service or cleaning.

  – Extreme duty seals are used in hydraulic reel motors to improve motor durability.

  – Double packing on the hydraulic lift cylinder piston assembly improves its life cycle and combats cylinder “leak down.”

Whether it’s the SLF-1880’s feather-light footprint and maneuverability, the comfort of the LF-3400/LF-3800 or the superior productivity of the LF-4675/4677, Jacobsen fairway mowers provide healthier and more attractive turf.

Get Your Greens Back in Action Quicker with DuraTines

Get Your Greens Back in Action Quicker with DuraTinesDuraTine

Golf course superintendents are always looking for ways to accomplish their tasks in less time with fewer disruptions. After all, what is one hour of play worth? Jacobsen’s new DuraTine XL and XLT aeration tines allow the staff to keep equipment moving.
Jacobsen’s new DuraTines last longer than its original tines, and up to 75 percent longer than competitive equivalents. The new premium (DuraTine XL) and ultra premium (DuraTine XLT) tines have a performance enhanced surface which improves the life and performance of the tines through better abrasion resistance, strength and overall part toughness. All tines use a hardened steel and trivalent coating for appearance and rust protection. Wall thicknesses on hollow tines have been increased, and XLT tines feature carbide tips.
While premium tines have a higher upfront cost than regular tines, they do not need to be replaced as often as lower quality tines. This fact alone makes buying premium tines the best option for keeping aeration costs low.
Also, the “stop and go” of having to replace broken tines is minimized with DuraTines. The staff can get the job done quicker with better hole consistency than with lower quality tines.

All in a Day’s Work for Pebble Beach

All in a Day’s Work for Pebble Beach

U.S. Open at Pebble Beach

When the top golfers in the world take center stage for one of the year’s four major tournaments, they expect the courses to be at the highest level of playability. This year Pebble Beach Golf Links was one of those stages. To achieve tournament conditions for the U.S. Open in June, Pebble Beach superintendent Chris Dalhamer, CGCS, looked to equipment from Jacobsen.

Pebble Beach has the smallest greens on the PGA Tour, and Dalhamer selected the Eclipse 122 walking greens mower to help get them as close to perfect as possible. He has been with the Pebble Beach Company for 11 years and is completing his fifth year as course superintendent. During his tenure he has been involved with several large events, including the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the 1999 U.S. Amateur. He says the Eclipse 122 is a valuable tool.

“The Eclipse allows us to continually take inventory of what our greens need so we can set the mower to give us the cut we want for the best quality each day,” he says. “Being able to dial in the frequency of clip to a particular course is huge.”
With the battery-powered Eclipse 122, the battery position can be moved forward or back to be more or less aggressive.
“For this year’s U.S. Open,” Dalhamer says, “we moved the batteries forward to be more aggressive. It’s an enormous advantage. Mowers that have this flexibility are a huge contributor to giving us the best quality-of-cut possible. There’s not another greens mower with the capability of the Eclipse 122.”
As the preferred equipment supplier to the Pebble Beach Company and the PGA of America, Jacobsen also provided the maintenance staff with LF-3400s for fairways, Tri-King triplex mowers for intermediate areas, and for roughs, AR-522 five-gang articulated rotary mowers and HR-9016 wide area mowers. The utility vehicle of choice was the Cushman Turf Truckster.
Jacobsen’s support for this major event included tournament support consultant Vollie Carr and product support managers Rich Stutzman and David Walker. They provided valuable assistance to Dalhamer and his 36-person team and more than 100 volunteers. They were on the course around the clock throughout the tournament to ensure that the maintenance operation ran smoothly.

Eclipse 322 Respects the Environment and Delivers a Lower Cost of Ownership

City of AustinThe City of Austin, Texas, got more than it bargained for when it purchased six Jacobsen Eclipse 322 riding greens mowers. Originally chosen to support the city’s green initiative, the mower also proved to increase efficiencies, deliver a lower cost of ownership, provide a superior quality-of-cut and be a hit with operators.

“This mower exceeded our expectations,” superintendent Nick Smitham says. “Our operators are very excited about them, and golfers rave about the quality of our greens.”

Smitham oversees five courses in Austin, four 18-hole layouts and one 9-hole facility.

Austin is a very environmentally conscious city, and enacted a plan to be carbon free by 2020. The courses were using the gas engine model of Jacobsen’s Greens King IV+ on greens, but as a result of the initiative decided to demo the hybrid diesel model of the Eclipse 322.

“We really put this mower through its paces,” Smitham says. “We only have five-person crews at each course, so we run hard, even when it’s wet. The Eclipse 322 did everything we asked of it.”

The obvious advantage of this mower is its environmentally-friendly features — no hydraulic oil to leak or change, and significantly reduced noise and exhaust emissions.

“We’re no longer at the mercy of hoses,” the superintendent quips. “There are other environmental cost savings such as fuel, fluids and reduced maintenance.”

Smitham and his staff discovered several other value-added features of the Eclipse 322 when they put the mowers into service two months ago. Among them is the ability to independently control mow speed, reel speed and frequency of clip to adapt the mower’s cutting performance to any course condition.

“With a small staff at each course, this is a tremendous advantage for us,” Smitham says. “For some tournaments we double cut, but with the Eclipse 322’s ability to adjust clip frequency we can accomplish the results we want in a single pass. Plus, we can mow at a slightly higher height of cut, which is healthier for the turf. With our former triplexes, we usually mowed at .150 inch. We can set the Eclipse 322s at .180 inch and get a faster green speed and a more consistent ball roll.”

Not lost in the equation is labor efficiency. Because the transport speed of the Eclipse 322 is faster, the course maintenance staff gets the job done more quickly. Smitham estimates the Eclipse 322s have trimmed 30 to 45 minutes off the time it takes to cut greens every day. And, because operators are asked to perform maintenance duties, fewer parts on the hybrid mower reduce labor costs.

The operator station is ergonomically designed to optimize functionality and comfort. This reduces fatigue and provides an unobstructed view that makes it easy to maintain precise, straight mowing lines. The advanced InCommand control system allows operators to adjust speed easily and comfortably with a joy stick instead of foot pedals.

“Our operators were involved with the demos every step of the way,” Smitham says. “They take their jobs very seriously and have a great deal of pride in these mowers. Everyone says the Eclipse 322 is the easiest and most comfortable mower they’ve ever operated.”

The local Jacobsen dealer, C & M Golf & Grounds Equipment, performs any major maintenance. Smitham has been a superintendent for 25 years and has been with the City of Austin for 18 years and is very familiar with Jacobsen equipment. He says a close partnership with an equipment dealer is an important element of a successful operation.

“We have a very good relationship with C & M and Jacobsen,” he explains. “They are on the ball making sure their equipment is right for us. Along with people from Charlotte, they were very thorough in training our operators in the operation of the Eclipse 322. The mower is extremely quiet, and sometimes if an operator doesn’t hear any noise he doesn’t think the equipment is cutting. They showed us how to set up the mower to make the most of its capabilities.”

As a Class A superintendent, Smitham feels an obligation to promote his profession.

“It’s our duty to show the golf industry is environmentally conscious,” he says. “Like the City of Austin, we want to be leaders in the effort to have a carbon-free footprint. Taking steps such as switching to the Eclipse 322 is a move in that direction. I find the new technology to be very exciting, and I’m pleased to be part of this movement.”
